WHICH BOOK IS BEST FOR ME?

1.   Digital Design Using Digilent FPGA Boards – VHDL/Vivado Edition ($44.95)

is the latest and most complete book.  It contains 13 chapters ranging from basic gates to the design of a VGA controller and the use of the USB port with PS2 port protocol for interfacing a keyboard and mouse.  Over 75 complete examples work on the Digilent BASYS and NEXYS FPGA boards.  This book can also be bundled with one of these FPGA boards directly from Digilent, Inc.  This is the best book if you want to learn to program in VHDL from the beginning using Xilinx's free Vivado WebPACK. We have prepared 112 short video clips that cover all of the material in this book and they are available free on YouTube.

2.  Introduction to Digital Design Using Digilent FPGA Boards – Block Diagram/VHDL Examples ($34.95)

contains 30 basic digital design examples that will run on either the Digilent BASYS2 and NEXYS2 FPGA boards.  In these examples, you create the design by drawing the circuit using the Active-HDL block diagram editor.  When you compile these block diagrams, the corresponding VHDL code is automatically generated.  This book will be useful if you want to understand basic digital design and get simple projects working on the FPGA boards without having to learn VHDL.  This book can also be bundled with one of these FPGA boards directly from Digilent, Inc.

3.  Advanced Digital Design Using Digilent FPGA Boards - VHDL/VGA Graphics Examples ($39.95)

assumes the knowledge contained in Book #1 in this list and contains over 30 complete VHDL examples of more advanced digital circuit designs using more complex state machines, data paths, timing requirements, and external peripherals including external memory, USB port with PS/2 protocol for keyboard and mouse control, and transmitting data via the UART to the memory.  These topics are covered by designing circuits that will display images and graphics on a VGA monitor using the Digilent Nexys3 Nexys4, or Nexys4-DDR FPGA board.  This approach allows you to learn and practice more advanced digital design topics visually.

4.  VHDL By Example - Fundamentals of Digital Design ($39.95)

assumes no previous knowledge of digital design.  You start at the beginning, learning about basic gates, logic equations, Boolean algebra, and Karnaugh maps.  In over 70 VHDL examples, you learn how to design combinational and sequential digital circuits, and even a complete microprocessor core, simulating them using the Aldec Active-HDL simulator. Once you simulate your digital design, you may want to download it to one of the many low-cost FPGA boards that are available on the market.  This book could be used with any type of FPGA board. We have prepared 112 short video clips that cover all of the material in this book and they are available free on YouTube.

Introduction to Digital Design Using Digilent FPGA Boards - Block Diagram/VHDL Examples
Richard E. Haskell and Darrin M. Hanna
    (193 pages)

This book assumes no previous knowledge of digital design.  We use 30 examples to show you how to get started designing digital circuits that you can implement on a Digilent BASYS™ system board that can be purchased from www.digilentinc.com or other board with a Xilinx FPGA.

We will use Active-HDL from Aldec to design, simulate, synthesize, and implement our digital designs.  A free student edition of Active-HDL is available from Aldec, Inc. (www.aldec.com).   To synthesize your designs to a Xilinx FPGA you will need to download the free Vivado WebPACK from Xilinx, Inc. (www.xilinx.com).  The Xilinx synthesis tools are called from within the Aldec Active-HDL integrated GUI.  A more complete book called Digital Design Using Digilent FPGA Boards – VHDL / Vivado Edition is also available from Digilent or LBE Books.

This more comprehensive book contains over 75 examples including examples of using the VGA and PS/2 ports.  Similar books that use Verilog are also available from Digilent or LBE Books.

Digital Design Using Digilent FPGA Boards - VHDL/Vivado Edition
    4th Edition
Richard E. Haskell and Darrin M. Hanna
    (402 pages)

This book assumes no previous knowledge of digital design.  You start at the beginning learning about basic gates, logic equations, Boolean algebra, and Karnaugh maps.

In over 75 examples we show you how to design digital circuits using VHDL and simulate and synthesize them using Xilinx's free development environment, Vivado HL WebPACK. You can synthesize the designs to a Xilinx Spartan3E FPGA on either the BASYS™ system board that can be purchased from Digilent, Inc (www.digilentinc.com) or any of the Nexys boards. More recently, Digilent offers the Nexys4 board with an Artix-7 FPGA.  We have prepared 112 short video clips that cover all of the material in this book and they are available free on YouTube.  To find these, go to www.youtube.com/user/LBEbooks/playlists and click on Digital Design VHDL

To synthesize your designs to a Xilinx FPGA you will need to download the Vivado WebPACK from Xilinx, Inc. (www.xilinx.com).

You can use Adept 2.1 to download your bit files to either the BASYS2, Nexys2, or Nexys3 boards. The Nexys4 board uses iMPACT to configure the FPGA which is included with Vivado WebPACK.  All references to the BASYS board in this book apply to the BASYS2 board. All of the user constraints (.ucf) and Xilinx Design Constraints (.xdc) files for each board can be downloaded from http://www.lbebooks.com/downloads.htm.

Advanced Digital Design Using Digilent FPGA Boards
    VHDL / VGA Graphics Examples
    Learning advanced design concepts visually

Richard E. Haskell and Darrin M. Hanna
    (237 pages
    with color images)

This book contains over 30 complete VHDL examples of more advanced digital circuit designs using more complex state machines, data paths, timing requirements, and external peripherals including external memory, PS/2 keyboard and mouse control, and transmitting data via the UART to the memory.  These topics are covered by designing circuits that will display images and graphics on a VGA monitor using the Digilent Nexys2, Nexys3, or Nexys4 FPGA board.  This approach allows you to learn and practice more advanced digital design topics visually.  This book picks up where the book Digital Design Using Digilent FPGA Boards – VHDL / Active-HDL Edition (DDDF-VHDL) leaves off.

All of the examples contained in this book will work on the Digilent Nexys4 FPGA Board. The user constraints/ Xilinx Design Constraints (.xdc) files can be downloaded from http://www.lbebooks.com/downloads.htm.   These examples are in VHDL and can be implemented on any prototyping board containing the appropriate peripherals.

VHDL By Example - Fundamentals of Digital Design
Richard E. Haskell and Darrin M. Hanna
(337 pages)

This book assumes no previous knowledge of digital design. A free student edition of the Aldec Active-HDL simulator is available from Aldec, Inc. (www.aldec.com).

Once you simulate your digital design, you may want to download it to one of the many low-cost FPGA boards that are available on the market.  This book could be used with any type of FPGA board.  You would simply embed the examples we present in this book in a top-level design in which the inputs and outputs are tailored to your particular hardware.

A new pedagogical method called “flipping” has been shown to be very effective in enhancing the classroom experience.  Instead of coming to class unprepared and listening to an hour lecture and then going home to do homework, the order is “flipped” and you first watch short video clips online about a particular topic, and then the class time can be used to do “homework” problems, discussion, and answering questions.  We have prepared 112 short video clips that cover all of the material in this book and they are available free on YouTube.  To find these, go to www.youtube.com/user/LBEbooks/playlists and click on Digital Design VHDL
